Make an Assist and Help Hockey Players Score Against Leukemia

On March 26th, Chix with Stix, a group of area women hockey players, will lace up against the Boston Bruins Alumni Team to raise money for the Jimmy Fund in honor of Michael Cronin, a fourteen year old hockey player, who lost his fight against leukemia.

Michael was a bright light in the lives of those with the privilege to call him son, brother, cousin, and friend.  His fourteen years were filled with love, laughter and, despite his illness, life!  It was his impenetrable courage that saw him through his final hours.  In the early morning of February 4, 1998 Michael lost his lifelong battle with leukemia.  He would be the first to tell you that he did not wage his battle alone.  All along the way, right by his side, were his family, friends, the staff at the Children's Hospital with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the Jimmy Fund providing support to help him face each day with a smile, and what a smile it was!

On Monday, March 26th at 7:30 PM, at the Stoneham Arena, Chix with Stix will take on the Boston Bruins Alumni in a game to honor Michael's memory and say thank you to the Jimmy Fund.  The money raised will go to the Jimmy Fund in the name of "Michael's Team".  The Jimmy Fund started with a nationwide radio appeal on behalf of a 12-year-old cancer patient.  The Jimmy Fund helped to build, and now sustains, one of the most respected medical research and patient care facilities in the world, Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  Dana-Farber's mission is to provide expert, compassionate care to children and adults with cancer while advancing the understanding, treatment, and prevention of cancer and related diseases.

AVON BREAST CANCER 3-DAY WALK

            Dear Readers,

I am writing to you to let you know about the Avon breast cancer 3-day walk and to ask for help.

The Avon breast cancer 3-day walk is May 18th – 20th.  It starts in Leominster and goes to Boston.  This walk is 60 miles, 20 miles a day.  Each walker has to raise $1,900.00 by April 20th.  The money raised for the Avon breast cancer 3-day walk goes to many different areas including medical research; a national finance assistance program for medically undeserved women who need breast biopsies and support services; advocacy training; community – based breast health programs and more for details, you can visit www.avoncrusade.com.

The reason that I am asking for your help is because I have decided to participate in the Avon breast cancer 3-day walk.  I am only 21 years old and have lost many family and friends to all types of cancer.  There is one person that I lost to breast cancer who meant a great deal to me.  Her name was Anita Burns, she was my mother.  She died September 30th 1981 after suffering for about four long years.  I was only 2 years old when she died.  She left my father Peter A. Burns; my two brothers Peter M. Burns; Raymond Burns, and me.  She also left many other family members behind.  This was a very hard time for everyone.  I am sure that a lot of you can relate to my story.  That is why my goal is to help the American Cancer Society to try to find answers and hopefully cures.  So that hopefully there won’t be anymore sad stories about people losing their family and/or their friends to cancer.

My family was lucky that a wonderful woman named Paula Marques came into our life.  She married my father and became a wonderful mother to my two brothers and me.  She helped us become a family again.  My biological mother will never be forgotten!  That is why I am participating in the Avon breast cancer 3-day walk.  Paula my mother knows how important this is to me, so she also decided that she wanted to participate in the Avon breast cancer 3-day walk.  She has also lost many family members and friends to cancer, so she really understands how I feel.

So together we have to raise $3,800.00 before April 20th.  We are going to have a dinner at Supino’s Restaurant on March 5th at 5:00PM – 9:00PM.  There is going to be a DJ and a raffle for a TV.  The tickets are only $35.00 each; $10.00 will go for the meal and the other $25.00 will go towards our goal of $3,800.00. So, if you are interested in a great meal; music; and most important helping us to raise money for the fight against breast cancer, call me Alicia Burns at (978) 283-1259 or at 1-508-843-5546 to buy a ticket.  If you are not interested in buying a ticket, but are interested in helping us, you can make a pledge of any amount that you want.  So PLEASE just give me a call.  Just think you could help save a family member or friend, and/or stranger.
