Gloucester,
Massachusetts
Gloucester
was founded in 1623 as a Massachusetts Bay Colony by the Dorchester Company.
Fishing now, as it was back then, is a mainstay of Gloucester’s economy and
culture. Gloucester was the scene of the movie “The Perfect Storm” and drinks
are still served at the Crow’s Nest, the bar featured in the film.
Almost
as old as fishing is to Gloucester is the tremendous wealth of the arts and
culture in the community. Writers such as T.S. Eliot, Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow and Rudyard Kipling were
inspired there, and artists the caliber of Winslow Homer, Fitz Hugh Lane and
Childe Hassam painted there. Rocky Neck Art Colony is the oldest, continuously
working art colony in the United States. There are galleries and shops on the
"Neck" as well as in other parts of the city. Many days you can see
artists at their easels painting scenic views. For more about Gloucester check
